Stage Designer
The costume and set designer and director Reinhard von der Thannen has influenced the European theatre world for more than 25 years with his visionary, imaginative and extraordinary stage designs.
Born in Austria, he studied in Vienna with Erich Wonder.1987–92 he was the permanent set and costume designer at Freie Volksbühne Berlin under Intendant Hans Neuenfels. He worked among others at Opéra de Paris, Tha-lia Theater, Schauspielhaus and Staatsoper Hamburg, Theater Basel, Schauspielhaus and Opera Zurich, Burgtheater Wien, Schauspielhaus Düs-seldorf, in Mainz, Darmstadt and Stuttgart, at Schiller Theater, Deutsche Oper, Staatsoper, and Komische Oper Berlin, at Royal Swedish Opera, Malmö Opera, the Aalto-Theater Essen, at Wiener Festwochen, Wiener Staatsoper as well as Salzburger and Bayreuther Festspiele. Reinhard von der Thannen gave his directing debut with the world premiere of Antonio Salieri‘s “Catilina” at Staatstheater Darmstadt in 1994, for which he also designed set and costumes. His latest production was Gounod’s “Faust” at Salzburger Festspiele in 2016.
He was voted „Stage Designer of the Year” several times by Opernwelt magazine. His designs are being bought by nu-merous museums and collections. Since 2006 he has been appointed professor for costume design at Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften in Hamburg.
